On October 20, the Jo Daviess County Farm Bureau welcomed back their longtime Adopted Legislator, State Representative Carol Sente, for a fall farm tour. Rep. Sente brought several guests with her to learn about agriculture and see harvest operations in action. Rep. Mike Fortner from DuPage County joined the tour as well.
After a welcome meeting at Stella's cafe in Stockton, the group toured Drew Groezinger's produce farm, which grows certified natural produce sold at farmers markets and local restaurants. Drew also runs a successful CSA program, providing local residents with a continued supply of fresh vegetables. Lunch was held at the Lawfer Family's Willow Valley Dairy Farm with an informative tour of the robotic dairy held afterwards.
During the afternoon, the group toured Greg Thoren's grain farm and cover crop project while discussing conservation practices. They also rode the combine, helping to harvest several rows of soybeans. The afternoon concluded with a stop at Massbach Ridge Winery, where everyone sampled wine and learned about the wine making process.
The Jo Daviess County Farm Bureau enjoyed hosting their urban guests, and greatly appreciate the relationship they've built with Rep. Sente. This visit was her fourth trip to the county. Although Rep. Sente is not running for re-election, the Jo Daviess farmers look forward to continuing the friendship beyond her time in office and hope she will become an "alumni" Adopted Legislator. We hope to visit her district again next year and plan another farm tour as well. Thanks to Rep. Sente and staff and the Jo Daviess County Farm Bureau for coordinating this educational and fun day.
