Mercer County Kicks off Harvest with Adopted Legislator Tour
The Mercer County Farm Bureau kicked off harvest by hosting their adopted legislator, State Senator Laura Murphy (D-Des Plaines) along with staff members Marty McAlpin and Andrew Gomberg, for a fall farm tour. Senator Murphy was adopted by the Mercer County Farm Bureau in 2016 and hosted her adopted farmers for a tour of her district last summer.
The tour started out at the Biddle Feed Mill where the Senator learned how a feed mill operates, how the business has grown and the significant role it plays in the local agriculture community. Part of the conversation also focused on the importance of foreign exports and strong trade agreements to grow the agricultural marketplace.
The Senator then rode in a combine at Justin Ewing's farm, harvesting a few rows of corn and learning about the technology used to run the machinery. While walking along the field, the farmers explained how the seeds were selected and planted and the process used to grow the crop prior to harvest.
A ribeye steak lunch was held at the McCaw family farm where they were joined by local state representative Dan Swanson (R-Alpha). The group toured farm machinery, learning about the role each piece plays in planting or harvest. Several legislative issues were covered over lunch, with both the farmers and legislators discussing the main concerns of rural and urban districts.
After a tour of the McCaw's historic farm house, they headed to the DeBlock family livestock farm. The DeBlocks recently constructed a new hog building and explained the rigorous process they followed to site and build the facility according to LMFA regulations. The Senator was also able to view both hogs and cattle, learning about livestock care and how the animals are marketed for sale.
Thank you very much to Senator Murphy and staff for spending their day with us, and thank you to the Mercer County farmers who hosted the tour. Plans are underway to reconnect during the Annual Meeting in Chicago this December and to visit Senator Murphy's district again next year.
